I would like to nominate the King William IV as an Asset of Community Value. Leasee Elaine Loughran positively welcomes this nomination. The King Willie, as it is fondly known by all, is now the only pub on Hampstead High Street and is a Grade II listed building. The pub acts as a local centre for the annual Race for Life cancer charity fundraising event, holds a popular weekly quiz night and is the meeting place for an unofficial book club. Elaine and her staff keep a kindly eye on the regulars, checking that nothing is amiss should they not see them for some time. There are four rooms for let above the bar which are popular with visitors including outpatients attending the Royal Free Hospital. In the past, patients feeling unwell and unable to travel have been allowed to stay for an extra night without charge. The King Willie provides a meeting place for a broad spectrum of our community. It has a long and honourable history as a gay friendly establishment for both sexes and although conditions are much easier for the gay community now , the King Willie is still a welcoming place for them as well as for other local residents, families and visitors.
